But I read those as I’ve heard people rave about how Doc Smith’s trippanetary was one of the early space operas and that it influenced many later science fiction masterpieces. The next bit, in Rome, however, is a straightforward story of gladiatorial combat and a slave revolt. He considers that mission a fiasco because he failed to get them to kill one another instead, and his species values self-preservation as much as those strange, triplnetary Tellurians value courage.

In a time when we are blessed with SFF characters who travel in shades of grey, it can be relaxing to leneman to a series where good is good, and that’s all there is to it. I can see the seeds that planted in later sci-fi authors and there are some great ideas here, but I found it was poorly written and at times the author really didn’t seem to know where he was planning on going and it meandered a lot.
I loved how the perspectives of different alien races is involved, it makes for a great story. Fish with brains, waging war!

Kinnison sometimes approaches this as well, though not to the same degree.
The Lens functions as a psychic enhancer for humans, at least and is attuned to its user in such a way that anyone else who tries to use or handle it is killed instantly. Neal Cloud, a mathematical prodigy who heads up the scientific efforts to do all three, is inspired to develop a means for their destruction when he loses his family to one and sets out to clear the galaxy of them. This isn’t done very successfully, especially in the first few where it all seems very tacked on.
